Roles Designer and Programmer

Illumination Magazine is an award-winning biannual magazine put out by Mizzou’s Office of Research. It was my first major design project for the department.

One of the things I immediately noticed about the previous iteration of this site, is that it didn’t feel very closely related to the print edition. And the print edition has some truly beautiful spreads. The imagery is engaging and vibrant.

To remedy this, I decided to get away from a standard article template, and do fully designed layouts for each of the feature stories. This gives the site more of the visual impact of the magazine, and in some cases allows us to expand on the concepts explored in print.

I also redesigned the main page of the site to allow easy navigation to feature articles, and give allow quick access to our web exclusive content. This includes animations and slideshows.

This site has won the 2010 eduStyle Award for Best Magazine Site, and was also selected as a “Noteworthy” site for August 2010 by eduStyle (Gallery Entry). CollegeWebEditor.com also published an interview with us about our process.
